Competitions

GRADES PRE K/KINDERGARTEN - LITTLE GEMS
Dancers must attend classes two times weekly, plus mandatory company rehearsals. Dances must attend one technique class such as Pre Tap/Pre Ballet, Jazz Acro and/or ballroom. The LITTLE GEMS will attend two regional (local) competitions.
GRADES 1-3 - RUBIES
Dancers must attend classes two to three times weekly, plus mandatory company rehearsals. Dancers must attend one technique class such as ballet, jazz acro and/or ballroom. The RUBIES are required to attend two (local) competitions.
GRADES 4-6 - SAPPHIRES
Dancers attend classes two to three times weekly, plus mandatory company rehearsals. Dancers must attend one technique class such as ballet, jazz acro and/or ballroom. The SAPPHIRES are required to attend two regional (local) competitions minimum and join the entire team attending one national competition! Dancers/soloists earning scholarships and other opportunities may attend more than one National.
GRADES 7-9 - EMERALDS
Dancers attend classes two to three times weekly. Dancers must attend one technique class such as ballet, jazz, drill team technique and/or ballroom. The Emeralds are required to attend two regional (local) minimum competitions and join the entire team at one national competition! Dancers/ soloists earning scholarships and other opportunities may attend more than one national.
GRADES 10+ DIAMONDS
Dancers attend classes two to three times weekly. Dancers must attend one technique class such as ballet, jazz, drill team technique and/or ballroom. The Diamonds are required to attend two regional (local) competitions minimum and join the entire team attending one national competition! Those dancers/ soloists earning scholarships and other opportunities may attend more than one national..
SOLOISTS (ALL AGES)
A soloist is a performer who dances alone, showcasing their individual technique, style, and stage presence. All potential soloists are required to audition for team dances as part of the overall program commitment. To maintain their soloist status, dancers must participate in a minimum of three regional competitions and one national competition each season.
ELITE TEAMS
Elite Teams are designed for dancers who demonstrate exceptional dedication, discipline, and advanced technical ability. These teams are offered for select age groups and represent the highest level of training and performance within the Motion program. To qualify for elite you must have completion of at least one full season with Motion and have proven ability to execute advanced technical skills across core styles (ballet, jazz, contemporary, etc.). Elite students must participate in four regional competitions and one national competition. It is mandatory that elite students take one weekly private lesson to support individual technique.
BALLROOM STARS
Ballroom stars are for dancers who have shown special skills required for Ballroom Dancesport. Dancers must attend the ballroom class for their age division as well as participate in a 1 ballroom Dancesport competition as well as 1 regional (local) commercial competition.
Auditions
Motion Dance Center, MDC Company is a competitive dance team for dancers aged 5 and up.
AUDITION PROCESS
Our members are accepted through an audition process that includes performing a series of dance combinations for the director and judges, an interview, and a questionnaire completed by the applicant and one parent.
The member and both parents are required to sign a contract that commits them to take specified classes and attending specified competitions, workshops, and other events, which begin in August.
MEMBERSHIP
Membership is reevaluated each year based on the student’s growth and contribution to the team, including commitment, participation, integrity, maturity, respect, and interactions with fellow members, teachers, and the director.
Company members take dance classes and attend rehearsals Monday through Friday (usually 3-4 days a week; schedules vary with all students), with core classes in Ballet, Jazz (Company Technique) and Ballroom.
MDC Company Little Gems, Rubies, Sapphires, Emeralds, and Diamonds teams are required to attend competitions. This year, we will start with our first competition April 10th. Elite Teams and soloists first competition will be February 13th.
This is for students who are talented, serious, dedicated, and excited about dance, belonging to MDC Company means getting a chance to develop their technique quickly and correctly through intense focus and practice. With that, their poise, sense of artistry, self-confidence, and self-discipline will also grow.
Belonging to a Company also means working well with a team. Good sportsmanship, peer support, polite manners, integrity, and age-appropriate maturity are expected. This positive attitude, combined with hard work and a significant investment of time, results in a strong bond between Company members. You will form genuine friendships here that will last a lifetime. Additionally, you will develop a deep understanding of commitment and discipline that will prepare you for college and a future career, whether or not that involves dance.
